The sight, as set up, will NOT install a tight front dovetail sight. I was told by Brownells "Well, you should never push against the blade directly always against the base of the dovetail."

If you get the Kimber attachment you might be able to push against the dovetail. I broke one sight. The tool needs to include a piece just for dovetails.

Easy to use and fits a wide variety of pistols. I have used it for about 5 years on numerous pistols and it has worked well. Sturdy construction for years of use.

I've been using this equipment at our agency for 5-6 years. It is solid and well built. It makes adjusting, removing, or replacing sights easy. I don't know what I would do without it now. Our agency primarily uses Glocks, I have never had a negative issue with this tool.

You would expect a Kimber made product to install/remove a kimber front sight....this will not (and yes I used the 40439 Kimber pusher). In fact, it will not install/remove a tight dovetail front sight on any gun period. The slide clamp has too much vertical play and the design of the clamp block allows the slide to rotate. I would like to hear from other gunsmiths that have had success using this tool on front sights as it professes...bet you don't see any testimonials from certified gunsmiths regarding this product.

I've used this sight mover on my Kimber and my M&P Fullsize. It works like a charm on both. I'm not sure what the other Kimber users' issues were -- mine was previously very well used, but it still came with the stock sights. I gave it some PB Blaster and once properly aligned, it didn't take an unreasonable amount of force to break the front sight loose. My stock M&P sights came out with 0 issue when the gun was brand new, and a new set of Truglo TFOs went in without a hitch.

The way I used it, I had leather shims to hold the slide in place, and an aluminum block on the bottom -- the whole mess bolted to the workbench. However, I have noticed that on Springfield XDs, you may need to use a cheater bar to get brand new sights out of the dovetail.

As a caveat, you must be very sure that the pusher is aligned such that it won't gouge the slide itself, because it will pretty much power through whatever finish you stick in front of it.

Let me start by saying that i like the XD platform pistols they are reliable durable and reasonably accurate, My carry gun is an XD .40. but changing the sights on them is a pain. both the slide and sights seem to be made of an unobtanium and anamantium alloy that resist all files and cutters but then the sights are pressed in to place at the factory with the force of ten stars going super nova. traditionally removing the sights was a job for 3 men and a small boy. but i just got the Merpolight press this thing is awesome. it can apply the ten quadrillion tons of force required to remove the sighs easily. the price tag is a bit hefty but it id by far the best sight press I have ever used. i like being able to mount it to the bench so it doesn't move. the only negative that i have it that you have to look t the chart to see which side of the riser block to use for each slide it seams a bit of laser engraving on the block could have saved that need for at least the common guns IE Glock 1911 XD M&P etc.

In my seventh year of using this tool and it has paid for itself in time- and labor-savings! I use it mainly for pistols, but have made aluminum inserts and shims to accommodate a variety of guns. Some slides, like the XD design, require a shim to provide adequate purchase and secure the slide in proper position, but taking the time to learn how to use the tool pays big dividends! It will provide all the force necessary to move the most intractable sight, and is indeed a universal tool. Pricey? Yes. Worth the money? Absolutely!

I was given this to see how to improve it. It will install some sights, but won't do a very good job of fine adjustment. It won't install some sights very well at all, either. This tool left so much to be desired, we went looking for something better. I work on all things precision from guns to jewelry, to guitars, to time pieces. I finally ask a friend to make one with a fine thread adjustment secondary slide mechanism, and a selection of sight moving blocks. He is an aerospace precision tool and tool & die maker. He was not in a good mood that day, and I got his "don't bother me" price and it was still just over $2,000 for TWO markedly better products. This included several adapter blocks for various sights, frames and slides. This a bespoke price for a mass produced product. Acme thread is far from hard to come by. That is that "special square thread" used on these tools and millions of vises & clamps around the world. Machining the aluminum blocks? Jay had the second tool done in under 3 hours. He even added replaceable bushings for the acme thread, and a lash adjustment. I am not a moron, and I know machinists, tool & die makers, and CNC operators. This product was the subject of a lot of ridicule among them. The very second you put the word "universal" on a product, it had better be really super special, or it will likely do a universally mediocre job on everything. This falls into the latter category. It installs some sights. (some sights, not all). Once you have removed the old sights and have the new ones on, you will need another tool to perfectly align the new sights. The treads on the push block are huge. You can move the sights, but there is no finessing anything. It is okay for shoving some stubborn old sights out, but that is about the extent of its true usefulness. and even there you will be wanting some special adapters for front dovetail sights. For $670 this is a monumental disappointment. I can see why I got it handed down to me. I also got to design the new tool too! I have designed several specialized tools. I wind up with a collection of ill conceived junk in the process, and a laundry list of suggested improvements and complaints. This thing was pricy and limited enough, I decided I should speak up. IF you think you will pull enough sights that this will pay for itself, go for it. If you can make working drawings, maybe go find a machinist or a tool & die maker. I buy that Acme Thread in 10 foot lengths for special clamps and other tools. This tool is so unremarkable, I wish the Chinese would make an $89 knock off. $670? I could make a hydraulically driven tool for that kind of money. The only thing this does really well, is easily force off old sights provided they will engage the slider block. We are sending our new tool and it's accessories off to an attorney, and looking into a patent. Personally, I have zero interest in any patent royalties from what I came up with. I know better than to expect any return on an investment for a patent on a tool for a very limited market. I have been down that road before. I am not passionate enough about the marketability of it to throw my money into that pot. I'd rather spend my time on the range than in court defending a patent that will expire before it makes back enough money for the expenditure in time and money. I have some new ideas for an even better version, and I might feel better about it, but I may never get around to it. This Meprolight tool rams sights on and off quite fast, but the designers were not looking at exactly what types of sights it would be required to work with. That is painfully obvious! It is fairly well made, but not overly well designed.

This thing is a boat anchor at best.

While it may remove some sights, not a chance on an HK VP9.

Glocks, sure. 1911's, yes... But can be tricky. S&W M&P, yep.

However, the slide wants to twist while pushing. Yes it is true you can use shims and support the slide with leather, but at a cost of $500+, why should you have to.
